Having a casual conversation with someone on New Year’s Eve, I was asked if I was making any resolutions this year.

My response was that I wanted to try new things in 2016.

“New?” he responded. “You mean like jumping out of an airplane? Things like that?”

No…not jumping out of an airplane–I already did that….I’m talking about all the little things all around me that I have never done.

Like going to Waffle House. I’ve lived in the South for 21 years and I’ve never gone to a Waffle House.

I tend to go to the same restaurants, the same stores–I like the familiar and it is easier to just keep doing the same things over and over again.  I’ve yet to run the Peachtree Road Race in July and there’s various festivals around I’d like to attend, including the Yellow Daisy Festival in September. It’s so easy to say “I’m too busy…it’s going to be too crowded….I’d rather just stay home…..” and I end up missing all kinds of new things.

So my goal is to get out of my self a little bit more and try at least one new thing each week. I’ll be keeping a record of them here, and by the end of next year I hope to have at least 52 new experiences to look back on, 52 new ways in which I have started to bloom.

Yesterday, I had my first waffle for breakfast at Waffle House, and later we ate a Vietnamese place for dinner (I <3 Pho’s).  Both were better than I expected. One day, two down…fifty more to go!

How about you? What have you been missing out on? Is it time to try something new?
